Well to put it the easy way, the emotional thing carried with people in times of conflict are usually heavier than the physical items. Lt. Jimmy Cross is carrying with him the fantasies of a relationship with martha that has and never will come to pass. He carries with him a picture of Martha to remind himself of the regret he carries for not foolowing through with his intentions toward her. Yet he carries it with him to distract himself from the ungodly nastiness that surrounds him everyday in the conflicts of Vietnam. Although it will come to pass that these fantasies will lead to even heavier emotional bags as one of his troops gets killed because he was fantasizing and not doing his job. Whether a person is in combat or not, we all carry emotional things with us. The amazing thing is, that inside your heart will always weigh more than anything you can carry on your back.
