Week 2: Discussion Questions

3. There seems to be a possibility for anyone to be in love. No matter how mentally ill a person can be, they still appear to be able to be attached to another human being or animal. Rose obviously became infatuated by a certain man in her life. She was in love, and seemed to be carrying out the traditional definitions of being in love. While it may be possible to be in love and be a little disturbed in the head, Rose's love stretched and became an obsession. She loved the man named Homer, but it does not become clear to the townspeople how deeply in love she was with him until they found him. The fact that they found a gray hair on the pillow next to Homer's corpse indicates that Rose, with her full head of gray hair, slept next to his decomposing body. Rose began with just simple love, but her attachment to Homer caused her to want to keep him by her side forever.

6. I was not too bothered by the ending of the story "The Storm". I do not believe that every story needs to end happily. This story ended in a happy way, but it was still not that happy. If every person in the story knew what happened, then it would have taken a different turn. The part I did not really like was the indication that they were going to continue the affair beyond that one night. The man tells his wife that she can stay away for a month if she wants to and that he is basically getting along fine by himself. Stories do not need to reinforce the most prominent opinion of society, due to the fact that each author has their own morals and ideals. In real life this type of event is one that can definitely happen, and in this very same manner. It happens, but no one speaks of it again and they go on in their daily lives. I think the affair should not have happened, but if it has to then I think it should have gone on the way the author wrote it. Otherwise, there would have been controversy and people's would be ruined.
